About Us!

The East Midlands Earth Structures Society (EMESS) was formed by six earth building enthusiasts in the Spring of 1994.  It a regional group in Lincolnshire under the wing of the Earth Structures Committee of ICOMOS-UK (the International Commission on Monuments and Other Sites-UK Committee).

ICOMOS-UK is part of UNESCO, which in turn is part of the UN.  Other regional groups are in East Anglia (EARTHA), the Market Harborough area (HADES), and Devon (DEBA).

We are strictly a non-profit society. Our membership contributes towards workshop materials, running costs such as refreshments and meeting space rental and our events.

Members have the full range of interest in this type of building, from ownership, to repair, to design, and to construction.  As a result the events we organise are of great interest to building owners, building firms, architects, surveyors, engineers, conservation officers, students in various fields, apprentices, historians, and even DIY enthusiasts.

Members and non-members alike take part in local workshops for earth construction techniques as well as seminars on the history, construction and present use of Mud and Stud buildings within Lincolnshire as well as other earth builsings.

The society usually holds four to six meetings each year, which are a mixture of evening seminars (during the winter) and workshops and site visits (in the summer).

We are in contact with and have worked alongside the University of Lincoln, Heritage Lincolnshire, The Village Church Farm Museum (Skegness), Millstone Heritage Training and Millstone Restoration (heritage contractor).

2019 was our 25th anniversary year for the society.
